KATAN. is a thread, prepared by twisting a different number of silk filaments according to requirement. This gives a firm structure to the background fabric. Katan is a plain woven fabric with pure silk threads. It consists of two threads twisted together and is mostly used for the warp of light fabrics and sarees. Sometimes 2 filaments can be used to make the warp or weft to incorporate a texture or design.
Katan silk is the fine, soft and delicately lustrous kind of silk that has made Banarasi renowned the world over. Katan silk fabrics are made using the finest quality of Mulberry Silk in both the warp and the weft, woven in a plain weave.
A variation of Katan Silk fabric is Silk by Georgette (also called Katan Georgette or Summer Silk or Silk Georgette). This is a pure silk fabric and is obtained by using twisted silk yarns in the warp or the weft. The resultant silk fabric is thinner and lighter in weight than katan, making it suitable for wearing even in the hotter months of the year (hence, the name summer silk).
